Peacemaking Circles and Urban Youth
As educators we are responsible for having a heart for kids. We are NOT allowed to break down the spirit of kids. With that being said, it is our responsibility to get to the heart of the matter. The behavior that our students exhibit gives you insight to the lives they are living on a daily basis. The question should be what is making this kid exhibit behaviors that require suspension. You can learn this by conducting Restorative Practice (RP) Circles and the entire program on your campus. RP gives students a voice and an opportunity for educators to show they care. Many of our kids are not receiving the love or attention they need from home. And in search of that they are resorting to other measures to fulfill these needs. My presentation will display the importance of Circles and Restorative Practices on a campus.

Do Your Students Know What They Are Suppose to Be Learning?
The key to reaching the at risk populations is equipping teachers with the necessary tools to meet students where they are. This is done by teaching students to take responsibility for their learning through goal setting and student accountable talk. When students realize they can meet small goals and gradually build upon them, their behavior will change. Academic success will also occur when non-traditional interventions are utilized.

IMPLICIT BIAS: The Biggest & Least Discussed Issue in Education Today
Implicit Bias refers to the attitudes, beliefs and stereotypes that affect our actions and decisions in an unconscious manner.  These biases can be both favorable and unfavorable, and are activated involuntarily, without an individual’s intention. Everyone has Implicit Bias, but few of us are aware of it and how bias impacts our daily experiences. Educators, in particular, are at high-risk for being exposed to and allowing bias to negatively effect behavioral and academic outcomes. This  workshop will share real-life examples of different types Implicit Bias, how it impacts our schools and provide practical strategies for how to change it.

The F.R.E.S.H (Fun Relevant Engaging Standards-Based Higher-Order) Classroom Approach
Fun Relevant Engaging Standards-Based Higher-Order. From Katy Perry to Drake and every pop culture reference in between, we will share practical strategies to help teachers create culturally relevant, standards-based, instructional practices. Instead of dismissing and devaluing the interest of our students, we will explore ways to connect to the interest of students in urban populations, while ensuring that our lessons get to the depth the state expectations demand. Teachers and leaders will have a chance to see real student samples and lessons from the field.

At a Glance:
Audience - The F.R.E.S.H. classroom is an interactive session that was created to benefit teachers, campus leaders, and anyone else interested in the planning, implementation and evaluation of quality instruction. Strand - By increasing the cultural awareness of the educators in schools, we help students feel the value and validation they oftentimes miss in hegemonic school environments.
Research - There is much research in the field on the impact of culturally responsive pedagogy, and much on standards-based instruction*, but this session bridges the two together to give educators information on how to create learning experiences that are meaningful to students.
Outcomes: Educators will walk away not only hearing about what works for students of color in theory, but they will be given examples of what it looks like in practice, as they see actual student work built on these theories and executed in classrooms that have had proven success. Lastly, participants are given the opportunity to exhibit their new learning with an exit activity that charges them to use the F.R.E.S.H. approach and receive feedback from their peers before they leave the session. In an age when we are asking educators to get more F.R.E.S.H. in the classrooms, this session models what that looks like for adults, by moving away from the tradition "sit and get"_x009d_ model of many professional development sessions.

Is My School a Better School Because I Lead it?
In this empowering workshop for principals and assistant principals, Principal Kafele will challenge each participant to examine their own leadership identity, mission, purpose, and vision as the leader of their school, which will include discussions on whether or not they have in fact determined their leadership identities, missions, purposes and visions. Principal Kafele will also engage participants in a very difficult conversation about their perceived worth and value to their school communities within their various leadership roles. The entire workshop is highly engaging and interactive. It promises to inspire principals and assistant principals to think deeply and critically about their roles as leaders of their schools and whether or not their schools are better schools because they are the leaders of them. As Principal Kafele states in his opening, “My intent is to create discomfort, tension and uneasiness in the room. Inspiration lasts for a few hours. Discomfort, tension and uneasiness endure until they are corrected

Leading with a Restorative Mindset: Develop a Differentiated Discipline Approach to Campus Discipline with Restorative Practices
The use of Restorative Practices is a modern approach that is gaining traction across the state of Texas. Educators in the classroom are looking for effective ways to improve student behaviors and build relationships with millennial learners. Administrators are looking for alternative strategies to the ineffective archaic approaches of traditional discipline but are not willing to give up the concept that students must learn a lesson, be held accountable for their actions and receive some type of consequence in order for change to take place. From administrator to administrator, join Rufus Lott III, and Denise Holliday co founders of Texas Educators for Restorative Practices, for an in-depth look at the practical applications of restorative practices being utilized in a differentiated discipline approach that does not totally abandon our traditional mindset.

The End to a Great Beginning-Backwards Planning Implementation Strategies
No matter what we are working on if we have an end result in mind we can make a solid plan on how to get there. Even though we have a set plan we can change our direction if needed, but we then should come back to that set plan just as if we were taking a detour on the road. By beginning with the end in mind, instructional leaders will navigate through hands-on strategies to avoid the common pitfall of planning forward from activity to activity, only to find that some students have reached mastery for the final assessment while others have not.

Where Trust Can Take Us: The Importance of Building Solid Trust in the Workplace
Trust is such a small word but carries a HUGE connotation and responsibility. Everyday employees are making themselves, their work, and their livelihoods vulnerable, trusting that their supervisors will support or at the very least do them no harm. As a supervisor- you hold positional and influential power. As a team member, you hold important keys to building and maintaining trust with your supervisor and teammates. This little tiny word carries so much weight. Building trust with your coworkers allows you to take risks and grow to reach your goals as a team.

Cultural Competence for Educational Equity and Success
Cultural competence can be used as an approach to improve quality and eliminate racial/ethnic disparities in education. In America, there is an educational achievement gap that can and should be eradicated. One of the contributing factors to this gap is a lack of cultural competence on the part of teachers and schools across the country. This workshop will: a) provide an explanation of what cultural competence/proficiency is; b) examine how the lack of cultural proficiency can impact the academic achievement of students of color, ultimately influencing educational outcomes; and c) provide some inroads into what can be done to increase the outcomes for children of color in order to help them reach their highest potential.

So You Aspire to Become a School Administrator? LET'S TALK!
In schools across America, there are thousands of classroom teachers who aspire to one day become school leaders.  They are either thinking about enrolling in a graduate school leadership program; they are already in a program or they have completed the program but have not yet landed their first administrative position. They are hungry and eager to lead. The problem is that many of them do not have the necessary access to seasoned and effective school leaders that can share with them the ins and outs of school leadership to help them determine if this is what they truly want to do. From afar, they see their principals in action, but unless that principal is willing or able to engage them in the long discussions about school leadership, chances are they are only learning through observation and from the vantage point of their classrooms. This workshop was designed for those individuals. It fills the void of those heart-to-heart conversations with a seasoned principal. It provides the aspiring principal with a wealth of information to think about and to consider now toward pursuing the principalship. This workshop is particularly useful as a compliment to an existing district leadership development program.

There is no one best way to lead. From Mahatma Gandhi to Winston Churchill to Martin Luther King to Rudolph Giuliani, there are as many leadership styles as there are leaders. The presenter will provide theoretical knowledge on leadership skills and styles that successful school leaders and aspiring school leaders can employ in the workplace. Building relationships has an impact on student success, but C.A.R.E. is also the answer to changing chronic negative behavior. This workshop will demonstrate how to Choose a behavior to target, Analyze the data, create a Replacement behavior, and provide Encouragement strategies that support lasting change. This 4 step intervention process will help keep students in class, increase instruction time, and support sustained positive behavior change.

Blended, personalized learning provides ideal toolsets for improving literacy outcomes in data-driven implementations. This is a highly participatory workshop where Dr. Almitra L. Berry, author of Effecting Change, invites thoughtful discussion on four provocative questions.
